August 3, 2017
It is hard to believe that in just a few short weeks the 2017-2018 school year will be upon us. We are excited and optimistic about the upcoming year and look forward to getting things started on Monday, August 21st, as we welcome back our students. Our message this year to the young men and women that we have the opportunity to serve, is to focus on the two things in life that you are in total control of at all times, your Attitude and your Effort. Legendary coach and executive Pat Riley once said, “If you have a positive attitude and constantly strive to give your best effort, eventually you will overcome your immediate problems and find you are ready for greater challenges.” A great effort springs naturally from a great attitude and that is the message we want to try and get across this year to our students.
We will have a new face in the building this year as Mrs. Becky Sewell retired at the end of the last year. We would like to thank Mrs. Sewell for her years of service and we wish her nothing but the best with her retirement. We are very excited to welcome Mrs. Dawn Delcoma to the Strasburg-Franklin Local School District. Mrs. Delcoma comes to us from the Claymont City School District and will serve in the role of Digital Media Specialist for the 2017-2018 school year.
In an effort to continue to provide our students with the best educational experience possible we have added some new course offerings for the 2017-2018 school year. We are bringing back the Project Lead The Way program district-wide and all students will have the opportunity to participate in this program. At the middle school level, all seventh grade students will be required to take a Study Skills class and a Digital Media class. At the eighth grade level, all students will be taking an Introductory Spanish and French class along with an additional period of Math to help sharpen their skills. On the high school side, we are excited to announce that we will be offering five College Credit Plus classes this year taught by Dr. Ellen Christy and Mrs. Tanya Horne. Botany and Zoology have also been added as additional Science electives. In addition to our new academic offerings, we have also added a few clubs for the upcoming school year. Fellowship of Christian Athletes & More, Foreign Language, and Youth to Youth are new clubs that students will have the opportunity to participate in. As you can see, there are many great things happening at Strasburg right now. As we move forward, we will continue to evaluate and improve the opportunities offered to the students of the Strasburg Franklin Local School District in the hopes of giving each student the best educational experience possible.
Last year I stated that our greatest, most important initiative is to make sure that we are always “Keeping the Main Thing, the Main Thing,” which is our students. This has not changed and will not change. It is important that as educators, parents, and community members we never forget this. We will continue doing what is best for the young men and women that we have the opportunity to serve each day and continue to instill that Tiger P.R.I.D.E. (Personal Responsibility in Developing Excellence) in them. Through a close and collaborative partnership with everyone associated with Strasburg High School and Middle School, I am confident that we can continue to take steps forward and make our school an even better place for students to learn and grow.
